What makes Butte Falls special
Butte Falls is a waterfall near the town of Butte Falls in Jackson County, Oregon. It totals 15 feet tall in one wide cascade, which makes it a low, broad fall rather than a tall, narrow one. The water spreads across the rock and drops into a large bowl below, and the width is what gives it its shape.
The fall has a working past. In the past it was the site of a water-driven sawmill that led to the town of Butte Falls, so the town grew up around the water power here. The mill is gone, but the fall and the town still share a name.
It is also a kayak fall: the cascade is runnable by whitewater kayak on the right side, shooting into the large bowl below. That is a rare thing for a fall this size, and it says something about the shape of the drop: a clean, wide chute rather than a broken cliff.
Its neighbours are spread out. Rumley Falls is 9.8 miles away, Seven Lakes Falls 19.5 miles away and Bailey Falls 19.8 miles away, so Butte Falls is a drive-to destination in its own part of southern Oregon.

Getting there and parking
- GPS: 42.5453476, -122.5623584 — Get directions
Navigate by coordinates rather than by name. Map apps often send waterfall searches to the wrong parking lot or the far side of the stream. Download an offline map before you lose signal: this is forest country, and signal is not guaranteed.
Best time and crowds
No stream gauge is linked to Butte Falls, so recent rain is your best guide. Expect the most water in spring and after heavy rain. In a dry spell, especially late summer and early fall, the same fall can look half the size.
This is a quieter fall than the famous ones in Oregon, and it is unlikely to be crowded. Even so, an early start is the best way to have the viewpoint to yourself.
Safety
Stay on marked trails and behind railings. Wet, mossy rock near the brink is the most common cause of serious injury. Never climb the cascade or stand at the top edge, even when the flow looks gentle. Plunge pools hide cold water, strong currents and submerged logs. Do not attempt to kayak the fall unless you are an experienced whitewater paddler who knows this drop.

Practical tips
- Screenshot the directions and these coordinates before you leave town: signal is thin out here.
- Pair it with Rumley Falls, 9.8 miles away.
- Go after rain: a low, wide fall like this one changes a lot with the weather.
- Look for the old mill story in the town: the fall is why Butte Falls exists.
